Road-trips from Toronto: Niagara Falls

A Sunday at Niagara on the Lake and Niagara Falls

We had our first guest staying this weekend. One of my partner’s friends from University has spent the last 6 months driving across America – and crossed over the Canada border to see us in Toronto for a few nights.

Niagara Falls is about a 90 minute journey from Toronto. We knew it was inevitable we would go see this natural wonder of the world at some point during our Canadian adventure – and also more than likely anyone coming to visit us would want to go see it. Which is why we were hanging on until someone came to stay with us until we made the trip.

Rather than heading straight to the falls, we stopped at a beautiful little town called ‘Niagara on the Lake’ on route. I absolutely fell in love with the place.

The streets were lined with teashops, bakeries, craft shops – all decorated with colourful flowers.

The visitor centre advised us the best spot on the lakeside for lunch was actually the golf club. It was about a ten minute walk from the centre of town where we had parked. The patio offered stunning views of the lake, reasonably priced food and a wonderfully delicious lemonade, strawberry and vodka cocktail!

After a quick peep at Fort George on the other side of the town, we hit the road again for the remainder of the journey.

The road to Niagara offered several viewing spots over the gorge.

Niagara Falls itself was amazing!

I definitely recommend the ‘Behind the Falls’ attraction which you access from the visitors centre. It is about 16 dollars for an adult ticket – and you get to go right down into the cliffs – and as the title says – go behind the falls.

A Sunday well spent!
